Sugaring Versus Waxing
Both waxing or sugaring can give you desirable results when performed properly, however, there are some big differences between them. Here is a list of the pros and cons of each.
Sugaring Pros
- All natural and safe ingredients
- Paste is Non-irritating
- Great for sensitive/reactive skins
- No strips needed means less waste
- Removes hair with the direction of growth
- Kept at a comfortably just warm temperature
- Can remove hairs as short as a 1/8 inch
- No sticky residue left behind
- Longer lasting smoothness
- Regular use leads to permanent hair loss
Cons
- Sometimes can take longer to perform the service, but often this is not the case
- Sugar paste consistency can vary depending on climate, moisture, and the client’s body temperature
- Bruising can still occur in delicate areas with susceptible individuals
Traditional Waxing Pros
(With strips)
- Fast and convenient
- Great for shaping brows
- Not a problem for people who do not have sensitive skin
- Ideal for covering large areas of the body in minimal amount of time
Cons
- Often contains questionable ingredients
- Can be very irritating on the skin
- More likely to lift, bruise, or tear delicate skin tissue
- Hair needs to be at least a 1/4 inch long
- Removes against hair growth
- Increases likelihood of ingrowns, due to hair breaking
- Requires applicators/strips, more wasteful
- Must be kept at a hot temperature that can be uncomfortable in sensitive areas
- Leaves a sticky residue on the skin that can be hard to remove
- Not likely to lead to permanent hair loss
- Soft/strip wax is very irritating in delicate areas, not ideal for brazilians.
Hard Wax Pros
(No strips)
- Hard wax quickly cools and hardens around the hair, does not stick to skin
- Hard wax is just as gentle as sugar when getting a Brazilian
- Hard wax is ideal for people susceptible to bruising
- Hard wax is excellent for sensitive skins and delicate areas
- Does not require a cotton strip to remove
- Excellent for removing coarse hairs found in the bikini area and underarms.
Cons
- Hard wax will not adhere if skin is too sweaty
- Hair needs to be at least a 1/4 inch long
- Removes against hair growth
- May increase likelihood of ingrown hairs if hair breaks easily
- Must be kept at a hot temperature that can be uncomfortable in sensitive areas
- Not likely to lead to permanent hair loss
- Hard wax is not suitable for waxing large areas on the body or for removing fine hairs.
